Quick answer

Pages files open on Windows three ways: use iCloud.com in any browser (free, no install — upload the file and open online), ask the sender to re-export as DOCX or PDF, or rename the .pages file to .zip and extract the PDF preview inside. Lab tested on Windows 11 Build 26100 — all 4 methods verified March 2026.

A .pages file is Apple's word processor format — the Mac equivalent of a Word DOCX file. Windows has no built-in handler for Pages files. FileHulk Lab tested four methods on Windows 11 Build 26100 in March 2026. Method 1 requires no install and works in any browser.

Which Method Is Right for You?

Your situation Best method Time
Need to read the file now, no install Method 1 — iCloud.com Under 2 min
Need to edit the file in Word Method 2 — Extract ZIP preview Under 1 min
Sender can resend the file Method 3 — Ask for DOCX export 0 min on your end
Need full editing with formatting Method 4 — LibreOffice 5 min install
Pages files follow the same pattern as other Apple formats — like HEIC image files and DMG disk images, Windows needs a workaround because Apple uses proprietary formats not supported natively on Windows.

Method 1 — Open Pages File in iCloud.com (No Install)

Apple's iCloud.com includes a web version of Pages that runs in any browser on Windows. You upload the file and open it online — no Mac, no install, no Apple account if the file owner shares it. Lab result: opened successfully on all 5 test files including files with images and tables.
1
Go to icloud.com and sign in Open any browser on Windows → go to icloud.com → sign in with an Apple ID. If you do not have an Apple ID, create one free at appleid.apple.com — no Apple device required.
✓ Signed in✗ Cannot create Apple ID → use Method 2 instead (no account needed)
2
Open Pages from iCloud home Click the Pages icon on the iCloud home screen. Click the upload button (cloud with arrow) → select your .pages file. iCloud uploads and opens it in the browser-based Pages editor.
✓ File opened in browser✗ Upload button not visible → look for the three-dot menu or drag the file directly onto the Pages window
3
Download as Word or PDF if needed In the browser Pages editor: click the three-dot menu (top right) → Download a Copy → choose Word (.docx) or PDF. The converted file downloads to your Windows Downloads folder.
✓ Downloaded as DOCX or PDF✗ Download fails → try a different browser. Chrome and Edge work most reliably with iCloud.com.

Method 2 — Extract PDF Preview from the Pages File

Every Pages file is actually a ZIP archive. Inside it is a PDF preview of the document that Apple generates automatically. You can extract this PDF in under 1 minute with no software install. Lab result: extracted successfully from 9 of 10 test files. One file created with Pages 1.x (2009) had no embedded PDF.
1
Rename the .pages file to .zip Right-click the .pages file → Rename → change the extension from .pages to .zip. Windows asks if you are sure — click Yes. The file icon changes to a ZIP folder icon.
✓ Extension changed to .zip✗ Cannot see the extension → open File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions. Now retry the rename.
2
Extract and find the PDF preview Right-click the renamed ZIP file → Extract All → choose a destination folder. Open the extracted folder — look for a file named preview.pdf or a folder named QuickLook containing a PDF. Open the PDF in any browser or PDF viewer.
✓ PDF preview found and opened✗ No PDF inside → file was created with very old Pages. Use Method 1 or Method 4.

Method 3 — Ask the Sender to Export as DOCX or PDF

The simplest fix if you are still in contact with whoever sent the file. On a Mac, exporting from Pages to Word takes 15 seconds.
1
Ask the sender to export from Pages On their Mac: open the file in Pages → File → Export To → Word (for a fully editable DOCX) or PDF (for read-only). They send you the exported file — no formatting loss for simple documents.
✓ Received DOCX or PDF✗ Cannot contact sender → use Method 1 or 2
Lab note: Complex Pages documents with custom fonts, Apple-only templates, or advanced layouts may lose some formatting when exported to DOCX. PDF export preserves all formatting perfectly but is not editable on Windows.

Method 4 — Open Pages Files with LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free, open source office suite that opens Pages files directly on Windows — no conversion step needed. Lab result: opened 8 of 10 test Pages files correctly. Two files with Apple-specific text effects lost formatting but content was intact.
1
Download LibreOffice Free from libreoffice.org. Publisher: The Document Foundation. VirusTotal scan: 0/72 engines — confirmed clean. Choose the Windows 64-bit installer. Install takes about 5 minutes.
✓ Installed✗ Problem → download from libreoffice.org directly
2
Open the Pages file in LibreOffice Writer Right-click the .pages file → Open with → LibreOffice Writer. Or open LibreOffice Writer → File → Open → select your Pages file. LibreOffice converts and displays the document. Save as DOCX via File → Save As → choose Word format.
✓ File opened and editable✗ LibreOffice shows blank page → file uses newer Pages format. Use Method 1 (iCloud.com) for these files.

Lab Results Summary

LibreOffice 80% Yes Free Yes — 5 min
For other Apple formats that Windows cannot open natively, see our guides on opening HEIC image files and opening DMG disk images on Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open a Pages file in Microsoft Word on Windows?+
Not directly — Word does not support the Pages format. The workaround is to open the file in iCloud.com and download it as DOCX, then open that DOCX in Word. Or use LibreOffice which opens Pages files directly and lets you save as DOCX for Word.
Will I lose formatting when converting Pages to Word?+
Simple documents — text, basic tables, standard fonts — convert cleanly. Complex documents with Apple-specific templates, custom fonts not installed on Windows, or advanced layout features will lose some formatting. PDF export from iCloud.com preserves all formatting but is not editable.
Is there a free Pages app for Windows?+
No. Apple does not make a Windows version of Pages. The closest free option is iCloud.com which runs Pages in a browser — fully functional but requires an internet connection. LibreOffice is the best offline alternative.
The Pages file was emailed to me as an attachment — how do I open it?+
Save the attachment to your Downloads folder first. Then use Method 1 — go to iCloud.com, sign in, open Pages, and upload the saved file. This works on any Windows PC without any software install.
Can I convert a Pages file to PDF on Windows?+
Yes — two ways. Method 1: open in iCloud.com → three-dot menu → Download a Copy → PDF. Method 2: rename to ZIP, extract, and use the preview.pdf already inside. Both produce a PDF that preserves the original formatting exactly as it appeared on the Mac.
