How to Convert WEBP to PNG Free on Windows — 4 Methods
WEBP images not supported by your software? Convert to PNG in seconds — free online and offline methods.
WEBP files are Google's compressed image format — great for websites but not always accepted by design tools, print shops, or older software that expects PNG. PNG uses lossless compression and preserves transparency, making it the standard for logos, graphics, and editing workflows.
FileHulk Lab tested all four methods below in April 2026 on Windows 11 Build 26100 using 20 WEBP files including transparent, animated, and standard images.
Which Method Should You Use?
| Your situation | Best method | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 files, no install needed | Method 1 — Microsoft Paint (built-in) | Under 1 min |
| Need to preserve transparency | Method 2 — IrfanView (free, batch) | 2 min install |
| Any device, no software | Method 3 — Online converter | Under 30 sec |
| Saving WEBP images from websites | Method 4 — Browser Save As PNG | Under 10 sec |
WEBP and PNG both support transparency — unlike JPG. If your WEBP has a transparent background, use Method 2 (IrfanView) or Method 3 (online) to preserve it. Method 1 (Paint) fills transparency with white.
If you need to view WEBP files rather than convert them, see our guide on how to open WEBP files on Windows.
Method 1 — Convert WEBP to PNG Using Microsoft Paint (No Install)
Paint is built into every Windows installation and opens WEBP files natively since Windows 10 version 1903. You can save as PNG in two clicks. Lab result: converted 18 of 20 test files correctly. Failed on 2 animated WEBP files — Paint saves only the first frame, which is expected behaviour.
Right-click your
.webp file in File Explorer → Open with → Paint. If Paint is not listed, click Choose another app → scroll down → Paint. The image opens at full resolution. Note: transparent areas appear as white in Paint — if your WEBP has transparency, use Method 2 instead.

In Paint click File → hover over Save as → select PNG picture. Choose your save location → click Save. The original WEBP file is untouched. The new PNG file is saved alongside it at full resolution with no quality loss.

Method 2 — Convert WEBP to PNG with IrfanView (Best for Batch + Transparency)
IrfanView is a free Windows image viewer that converts any number of WEBP files to PNG in one batch operation. It preserves transparency correctly — the key advantage over Paint. Lab result: converted all 20 test files correctly including 2 transparent WEBPs and 2 animated WEBPs. 100% success rate.
Free from irfanview.com. Publisher: Irfan Skiljan. VirusTotal scan: 0/72 engines — confirmed clean. Download the 64-bit installer (about 3MB). Also download the IrfanView Plugins package from the same page — this adds WEBP support. Install IrfanView first, then the plugins.

Open IrfanView → press B or click File → Batch Conversion/Rename. In the right panel navigate to your WEBP files → select them all (Ctrl+A) → click Add. The files appear in the input list on the left.

In the Output format dropdown select PNG. Under Output directory choose where to save the converted files. Click Start Batch. IrfanView converts all files instantly. PNG files appear in your output folder with the same filenames.

Method 3 — Convert WEBP to PNG Online with ezgif.com (Any Device, No Install)
Online converters work on any device including Chromebook, tablet, and older Windows versions. Best for single files or when you cannot install software. Lab result: ezgif.com converted all 20 test files correctly including animated WEBP to APNG. 100% success rate.
Open Chrome or Edge → go to ezgif.com/webp-to-png → click Choose File or drag your WEBP file onto the page → click Upload. For animated WEBP files, ezgif automatically converts to APNG preserving all frames. No account required. Files are deleted from the server after one hour.

Click Convert to PNG!. The converted PNG appears below with a preview. Click Save to download the full-resolution PNG file. Transparency is preserved exactly. For animated WEBP the result is an APNG file with all frames intact.

Method 4 — Save WEBP Images from Websites Directly as PNG
If you found a WEBP image on a website and want to save it as PNG without downloading the WEBP first, the Save image as PNG browser extension adds this option to the right-click menu. Works only for images currently displayed in your browser — not for WEBP files already saved on your drive.
Lab result: saved all 15 test web images as PNG correctly. 100% success rate.
In Chrome, go to the Chrome Web Store and search Save image as PNG → install the extension by Asad Manzoor (free, no account required). In Edge, search the same name in the Edge Add-ons store. The extension adds a new option to the right-click context menu on any image in your browser.

Navigate to any webpage with a WEBP image → right-click the image → select Save image as PNG. The browser downloads the image directly as a
.png file to your Downloads folder. No upload, no conversion step — the browser converts the decoded image in memory instantly.
